Raw Cashew nut or Raw Cashew Nuts in shell or Raw Cashews or Cashew Seed is naturally available item from cashew tree, grown in India,African countries, Indonesia, Vietnam etc. Cashew has been derived from the Portuguese name and “ caju” that has come from the Indian name “acaju”. Cashew nut along with the other tree nuts considered to be an essential source of nutrients. Nuts are nutrients filled seeds that directly enhance the development of human body and life. Cashew nut kernel contains around 47% fat, 21% protein, 5.9% moisture, 0.45% phosphorus, 22% carbohydrades,5% iron, 05% calcium for every 100 gms.

Cashew Nuts/seeds are rich in essential amino acids also. Cashew Nut kernels are a good source of minerals like sodium,potassium,calcium,magnesium, phosphorous. It has also been noted that cashew nuts provide more of essential trace elements like iron,copper and zinc than all other nuts.After processing cashew the remaining outer shell is used for manufacturing cashew shell liquid.

The cashew nut, the third widely consumed edible tree nut, often thought to be a seed is actually a single seeded fruit of a tropical evergreen tree (Anacardium Occidentale), belonging to the family of Anacardiaceae. The kidney shaped edible nuts are called kernels and are obtained from the Raw Cashew Nut (RCN) after removal of the outer leathery covering which surrounds it, using different processing methods. The countries producing cashew nuts are Benin, Brazil, Ivory Coast, Guinea-Bissau, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Mozambique, Nigeria, Tanzania, Vietnam, Togo, Ghana, Senegal, Madagascar and Burkina Faso in which India has become top producer, processor and exporter of cashew in the world market.

Cashew was introduced into Nigeria between 15th and 16th centuries by the Portuguese explorers. Cashew became a popular crop in 1953, when planted on on large scale principally for the nuts,afforestation and erosion prevention programmes. The commercial cultivation actually started in 1950 at Iwo, Eruwa and upper Ogun in the defunct western Nigeria. The nut size of the Nigerian land races of cashew is the same as those of India,Indonesia and Vietnam Cashew.
